Celso in Dumbo

Bronx Street Art

While parts of the Bronx are undergoing revitalization, other parts are as bleak as ever. Many of the blocks on East Tremont reek of poverty and despair. How ironic to see the Statue of Liberty here -- where generations seem trapped.

Jasmine Murrell Uptown

I've been meaning to check out her work for awhile. This looks intriguing.

Inwood Memorial Mural

This bit of writing on a memorial mural made these senseless deaths all too real to me. I thought about my many former W.H. Taft H.S. students who lived on University Avenue in the Bronx.

Constraction

Conceptual painting meets sculpture in this exhibit of conceptual abstraction at Deith Projects @ 76 Grand Street. This installation is by Ara Peterson and Tauba Auerbach.
It continues through August 9 and is worth a visit. Just don't go when you're feeling dizzy!

Zito in Visual Slang 2008

For years one of the cool things of working on the LES was Zito's space on Ludlow Street. Outside his gallery there was always art on the street -- mostly portraits on a variety of found materials. Zito always welcomed my students into his oasis. Along with so much of the LES, Zito's space has been a casualty of gentrification, and I miss it. But through August, a series of his work can be viewed on the walls inside the first floor of the Abrons Arts Center. All are painted in hi-gloss enamel on found materials.

Ovni in Visual Slang 2008

I discovered Ovni's charming pieces on the walls in Barcelona this past January. I am delighted to feature some new work from her Pink Series in this year's Visual Slang exhibit.

Chris Cortes in Visual Slang 2008

This was still drying when Chris stopped by with it, but it was worth the wait. He is a master of urban calligraphy melded with inimitable images.

Nelson Rivas aka Cekis in Visual Slang 2008

I love all of Cekis's characters. I wasn't sure, though, which one I was going to include in Visual Slang 2008. When he brought this piece over this morning, I knew I wanted to feature it.

Kenor of Martinez Family in Visual Slang 2008

Imminent Disaster in Chelsea

I found her again -- this time in Chelsea. 'checked out some of my favorite spots after picking up Onesto's pieces from Jonathan LeVine -- but there seemed to be a paucity of street art in the area. This freshly pasted image was the exception.

A1one in STENCIL NATION

I picked up a new book on stencil art at MoMa's bookshop on Thursday. (Howze, Russell. STENCIL NATION: GRAFFITI, COMMUNITY AND ART. Manic D Press, San Francisco, 2008.) 'recognized many of the artists whose work I'd just seen at the Cans Festival in London. I love the diversity of what's included here. I wish, though, that there had been a stronger sampling from Tel Aviv. Its two pages devoted to TA stencil art -- despite its inclusion of Ame72 and Rami Meiri -- are hardly indicative of what's happening there. 'was glad to see A1one's work represented.

East Williamsburg Street Art

When I first saw this image in the street, I couldn't decide whether it was the work of Swoon or Elbow Toe. On visiting Ad Hoc Art, I discovered that it was created by the artist, Imminent Disaster. Her work on exhibit in Poets of the Paste is certainly diverse. The exhibit continues through 7/13 @ 49 Bogart Street in East Williamsburg.

Os Gemeos @ Deitch Projects

This mesmerizing exhibit continues through August 9 @ 18 Wooster Street. I am already eager to return!

Chris Stain @ The Black Rat Press

I discovered Chris Stain's stunning work a few months ago when I saw this character on a sticker on NYC's Rivington Street. I was tempted to remove the sticker, but I didn't. (Someone else did a few days later!) I rediscovered Chris Stain's work at the Black Rat Press Gallery on London's Rivington Street. It is hauntingly beautiful.
